Recent art works

An appreciative awareness of the visual arts has been a feature of my existence since childhood but it was not until my thirties that I found the way to incorporate this interest into my working life which, until this time, had been keenly focussed upon matters of a far more technical nature.

A couple of years after emigrating to Melbourne, Australia, and much more by chance than intention, I found work on the ground floor level of the props and special effects industry. This lead me to establishing a business, SmartRRs, (Rigs, Robotics and Creative Mechanisms for the Visual Media) and henceforth to so much previously frustrated creative energy being given life in the form of animated humanoids, creatures and other stage effects.

Although in this period, I worked in very close conjunction and in support of a great many other artists, I regrettably rarely found the time or inclination to develop my own artistic ideas beyond the more technical aspects of my profession.

Eventually becoming disillusioned by finding the creative aspects of such work being suffocated by the impositions of commercialism, I came to redirect my practical skills to be employed in support of overseas humanitarian aid. As much as this led to some wonderful experiences and the essence of the work was personally very satisfying, I found myself unable to adapt to an existence within the highly politicised and self serving bureaucracies that dominate this large scale international industry.

By 2012, being very unsure of where to now direct my energies and while in a somewhat sombre mindset quite devoid of any creative enthusiasm or any interest in pursuing such ideas, I quite suddenly found myself in the power of some irrepressible external force that led me to firstly take more attentive note of my feelings of doubt combined with potential and, secondly, to turn these into visual forms which soon became a series of paper models.

No sooner had I watched these models being made by my own hands than it became apparent that I was also going to have to start making them on a much larger scale.

Hence the Decision series came into a physical existence….
