Kinetic Sculpture

The Passage of Time

In late 2015, I decided to pay heed to many suggestions that I should invesitgate making kinetic works combining some of my more technical skills with the desire to create sculptures, this being something I had been rather avoiding due to feeling that consideration of the mechancial, electrical and electronic aspects would dominate the more visual creative process.

The first result of this is The Passage of Time in whch the three elements of contrasting colours rotate gently at varying speeds and directions creating a random pattern of changing shapes and colours.

The work responds to the presence of observers but returns to a sleeping position of a single cloured disc when unattended.

Technically, the system is controlled by microprocessors driving low power servo motors, the moving elements being supported on a mechanical design intended to last decades but with easily replacable components should this ever be required.
