Development of the idea

The first inkling of this idea appeared one spring afternoon as I was sitting in a garden contemplating upon Life, perhaps the Universe and possibly anything else except making art. Something encouraged my hand to sketch a simple doodle upon an irrelevant newspaper that just happened to be on the table. By the following day, having sought out some coloured paper and a scalpel, the design begun to develop. Over the next weeks, a variety of models appeared which although not copied precisely, embodied the essence of the three larger pieces made over the following months.

Decision One

This first work was visualised to be built on a stand this proving to be very appropriate as in my original work space, there was not enough height from which I could have suspended it.

As with the other similar works, the structure is layers of flexible plywood that has been laminated over formers to create the finished shapes with the individual elements being joined together with small stainless steel connecting wires.

This piece, being approximately 110(cm) H x 160 W x 90D and supported upon a 180 high stand, is finished with high gloss enamel.

Decision Two

This piece is somewhat more robust than the first both in its technical construction and in having much stronger lines in the design.

It is approximately 120(cm) H x 110 W x 130D and is painted in a silk acrylic finish with each element being different colours on either surface.

Decision Three

This piece, while still conveying the idea of much energy leaping around in conflicting directions, presents a very different feel to the previous items due to being in black and white rather than mixed colours.

It is approximately 140H x 180W x 120D
